Lloyd , who twisted kraft paper around a metal wire, placed the paper threads on a loom and wove them into what was to become the traditional Lloyd Loom fabric. People have always known Lloyd Loom, even if they haven’t known what it is,” says David Breese, the managing director and founder of Lloyd Loom of Spalding. Toss your delicate satin slip into a Lloyd Loom equivalent and it will glide gently over the smooth weave and finished edges, and on to the pile of clothes at the bottom of the basket.

Whereas cane or rattan is handwoven directly onto the frame of a piece of furniture, Lloyd Loom is a machine-woven material made from tightly twisted paper, reinforced down the middle of the weft with steel and produced on a loom in a continuous strip like a length of tweed that is then cut and tacked on to a bent beechwood frame, with the weft as the upright stake.

Made of kraft paper twisted around steel wire, the paper covered wires, acting as threads, are fed into the loom to produce woven sheets of material with a rattan look. The Lloyd Loom woven material offers a smooth, snag free texture, providing more cushioning than rattan. Adding to its appeal, the chip free paper surface can be easily coated in unlimited colours and treated for durable indoor and outdoor usage.

Have you stumbled across a piece of woven furniture in your garage, in an antiques shop, or even inherited a much-loved item from a family member? Lloyd Loom weave is a machine woven material consisting of tightly twisted kraft paper, reinforced by paper wrapped vertical strands containing a steel wire core. The weave is woven in a continuous piece on the loom and is then cut and nailed onto a frame.

Classically, a solid beech bentwood frame is used which gives Lloyd Loom furniture its typically recognisable curved features. Lloyd Loom Weave Lloyd Loom weave is always the same composition apart from in a handful of rare cases ; the weave must be uniform and appear to be the same as in the image shown below. As the vertical strands of twisted paper contain a metal wire core, you should be able to stick a strong magnet to a vertical strand of the weave Sirrom, rattan and wicker do not contain a wire core, so the magnet will not stick.

Sirrom Confusingly, Sirrom furniture often features a Lloyd Loom style braid and is usually painted in classic Lloyd Loom colours, such green, pink and gold, therefore can easily be mistaken for a Lloyd Loom piece. You can identify a piece of Sirrom-wear by looking at the composition of the weave; if the weave is flat and resembles the image below, then the piece will be made from Sirrom.

Rattan and Cane Unlike Lloyd Loom weave which is nailed onto the furniture frame in sheets, cane or rattan is hand woven directly onto the frame. Cane and rattan woven materials are often thicker than Lloyd Loom and can even be rough to the touch, threatening to snag on clothing.

History of Lloyd Loom

Lloyd Loom wicker furniture has been inspirational for decades and continues to be the wicker furniture of choice desired by commoners and aristocrats. Marshall B. Lloyd Inventor of the Lloyd Loom.

A guide to Lloyd Loom furniture, the brainchild of Marshall Burns Lloyd. It contains chapters on the furniture’s origins, the way it was made, how to date it and.

Marshall Burns Lloyd created a process by which cellulose strands are woven into a wicker fabric as an alternative to the then popular method of wrapping cane around a frame. Each hand-crafted piece of Lloyd Loom furniture made today uses the same process to create the loom fabric, though we’ve added advanced technologies over the last quarter century to produce a continuous strand that will not burr, crack, or peel, resulting in a consistently smooth weave.

The fiber used to create Lloyd Loom fabric is twisted into a sturdy cord and wound onto small spools, then rewound onto larger spools that feed into the looms. Our looms draw cord simultaneously from more than spools to weave the Lloyd Loom fabric. A unique feature of Lloyd Loom is the use of aluminum stakes encased in loom fiber.

These stakes are inserted into the fabric for enhanced stability and durability. Once the loom fabric is woven, it’s sealed to withstand the elements, dried and wrapped onto massive spools. These spools are taken to the cutting room, where the wicker fabric is cut to shape for each piece of furniture. Skilled craftsmen fit these pieces of fabric to aluminum frames that are shaped and welded in our facility, taking great care to stretch the wicker into place and secure it with custom-made stainless steel staples.

The edges are trimmed and wicker braid is fitted into place by hand so that each piece is beautifully finished. This advanced finishing material is a high solid, polyester resin based paint that’s as flexible as it is durable, so it coats the furniture beautifully while providing a finish that can withstand summer heat and winter snow.
