At least in the United States, statistics show that interracial relationships are still a small but growing minority. As a rule it seems, most people prefer to date someone of the same skin color as theirs. In the past, interracial relationships were even legally frowned upon, but attitudes have changed considerably for the better in the past few decades.
Even glass-half-empty people will be pleasantly surprised to discover just how easily accepted their new relationship will be.
Black people are more welcoming of it. If some blacks do about, yes, blacks tend to be more white about it. This is the worst kind of sudo-intelectuial.
Growing up in a predominantly white area, my options were limited. As I was navigating my teens, love was shoved down my throat on TV; I watched my friends pair off at house parties, and I started to become even more aware of the need to find my perfect match. I carefully curated him in my mind. He was tall, authoritative, kind, and loving, but I never thought about what colour he would be. Aged 16, I entered my first interracial relationship.
The topic of race never came up. I was number two, possibly even three, but definitely a secret. It became glaringly obvious that there might be a reason he had the picture-perfect blonde girl on the outside, and me tucked away behind the scenes. I know now that if someone loves you they are proud of you, and I deserve to be loved loudly. But I went into my 20s without many Black friends and more interracial relationships followed.
I watched a few of my white friends date Black men. With each relationship, I accepted the fetishisation of the curly-haired, mixed-race babies I could provide. In a way, just being with someone was more important to me than challenging the microaggressions.

My cousins can be split into two groups: Ones who grew up with weaves and skin lighteners and ones who needed sunscreen and haircuts. Our family is a classic case of women and the black men who left them versus the white men who stayed. I remember being 6 and slapping my white uncle in the face to figure out why his face turned bloodred. I wondered how men with such delicate bodies seemed to be the only ones who could endure the storm.
When my cousin on the all-black side birthed a baby girl whose father had become abusive, we took a long ride to a shopping mall. She was looking to me for advice on raising a fatherless child, considering my firsthand experience. We rolled down the windows in her beat-up car and took in as much air as we could. There is nothing to worry about.
Black Woman Finds Out Her White Boyfriend Is Racist By Reading His Group Chat
The book, Judice said, is not intended to dismiss black men as loving, suitable partners. Black females begin to outnumber black males by age 16, Judice writes, partly as a result of high mortality and incarceration rates that Judice said result from systematic discrimination against black males. Black men are also twice as likely as black women to marry outside their race, she writes.
Black women are, in fact, the least likely group of women to marry outside their race.
Since America’s founding, the nation’s racism has made interracial relationships incredibly hard—even life-threatening. It was only 50 years.
While scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed, I came across a link to a Gawker article that one of my friends reposted. In an essay entitled ” The Reality of Dating White Women When You’re Black ,” writer Ernest Baker tackles big topics like Eurocentric beauty standards, the taboo aspect of interracial relationships, and why he dates white women, among others:.
Although I am a black woman in an interracial relationship, I only gave Baker’s piece a cursory glance at first. In the midst of a full news feed, it just seemed like more noise. In fact, I completely forgot about it until a few responses started to pop up. I couldn’t stop repeating the first part of the Clutch headline over and over again in my head. Nobody cares. Lots of people in this country would like to believe that race relations are swell, racism is dead, and everyone is happy.

Cheryl Judice, the author of the new book “Interracial Relationships between Black Women and White Men,” tells us why she believes more.
I am not even going to list my theories here because I would like to get your ideas without you feeling you have to respond to what I have written. I really would like some feedback on this issue. I think in general women tend to be more compassionate people not that men can’t be. I think we are more open and less afriad of straying from cultural norms. I think men are much more prone to socital pressures. Of course these are generalizations and there are always exceptions. During slavery, as I’m sure you’re well aware, the occurence of white slaveowners raping their black female slaves and biracial daughters was extremely common.
I think there grew such a hatred of white men, especially representing slavery and the whole power structure, in general, that it became taboo for black women and white men to be involved. In many cases, though, black men were beaten or killed for even looking at a white woman, so I’m not really sure why so many black men are with white women. That’s a lot of history to get over, too. Maybe it’s because we, as women, can somewhat understand a piece of what discrimination feels like although that is in no means saying that we understand what black men go through every day so we can be understanding, but a white man has literally no idea what that feels like, because he is at the top of the ladder or food chain or whatever you want to call it.
